Unable to assign a VM to Subnet in a Virtual Network

I have a working virtual network with 4 subnets. On one of the subnets, I have two SQL VM's that I shut down a couple of weeks ago.

Today I have been trying to setup additional VM's and restart the two de-allocated SQL VM's. They should all be part of the same subnet. When I restart the two SQL VM's, that were both in the same subnet, they both start up on the virtual network, but without the previously "attached" subnet.

When I try to create a new VM in the same subnet, the VM boots up on the virtual Network with no subnet, even though I  selected the subnet in the wizard.

I have tried using the same cloud service and the same storage account, I have tried with a different (new) storage account. The result is the same, the VM's all start up with no subnet.

What's going on here?
