Dev-Test VMs

$

Hi,

I was following along the steps in in this MSDN video

https://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/DevRadio/Azure-DevOps-with-Visual-Studio-Online-Part-2-Creating-DevTest-VMs-in-Azure

and this site

https://blog.codingoutloud.com/2014/01/31/stupid-azure-trick-3-create-a-dev-virtual-machine-in-windows-azure-2/

which led me to the Azure pricing page

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/member-offers/msdn-benefits/

My question specifically was, from these sites, it looks like there was some discounted pricing for Dev-Test VMs, which is what I will be using the VMs for. The client that I worked at, had an MSDN subscription (VS Enterprise), through which I activated Azure benefits.

Going through the steps in the blog and the video: while on the Azure portal webpage, when I click on Virtual Machines, it brings me to a Compute screen, with a variety of options underneath. However, the video/blog go through 'Compute'->'Virtual Machines'->'Fom Gallery'/'Quick Create' options. And on the next screen a 'MSDN' subscription checkbox, which apparently would show some additional images. My questions were...

a. Since the options are well different for me and I do not see any MSDN checkbox, am I missing something? Or is it just a changed interface, and since I'm logged into my MSDN account, I do not need to check any boxes?

b. Do I, or my client need to do something in order for the 'discounted' pricing to take effect? or is that pricing model not there any more? or does it automatically take effect since I'm logged into MSDN? Since I do not need load balancing etc. feature as this will be only for dev/test.

Thanks,

Shri

Manual scaling of VM

$

Hi,

I have a VM created through Azure portal and I would like to manually scale it based on a schedule. However, when I navigate to my VM, I am not seeing the Scale tile as mentioned in the below documentation -

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/monitoring-and-diagnostics/insights-how-to-scale

Is scaling based on the subscription type?

Thanks.

Slow to upload to vm but fast to download from vm using same source destination shares

Hi,

I have a VPN setup between myself and azure windows 2016 server. On my 50Mb/s dedicated link I can download (robocopy) to my VM file share at 50Mb/s which is great but if I try this in reverse uploading from the same localshare to the same VM share i only get less than 10Mb/s (again using robocopy).

The VM is a 2016 D11v2. Can it be that the link is throttled if not being initiated from within Azure? anyone have any ideas how I can resolve ?

Thanks for looking!

Scale Container Service

I want to use Docker Swarm so I created "Azure Container Service" with 1 Master and 3 Nodes.

How can I create automated scaling rules in terms of start/stop VMs?

With "normal" VM Scale Sets I can create rules like "start 1 more VM if CPU Percentage > X" - how can I do this with Azure Container Service?

Is it possible, to add or delete VMs to/from my scale set (scale out)?

Is it possible to scale my VMs up or down (change pricing tier)?

Should I use Azure to run a simple windows desktop app?

$

I have a simple Windows .Net desktop app that I need to run for 1-2 hours per day Mon-Fri.

I have a Mac / OsX environment for everything else, and am looking at options to run the Widows app.  Getting Parallels and a Windows OS is one way to go, but a cloud-based service has some appeal.

Is Azure going to work for me, or is it only applicable to larger business environments with multiple servers etc?

TIA ... John.

Azure VM IIS Windows Authentication

Hi,

I would appreciate any help that can be offered. I would like to achieve the following in Azure and having tried various tutorials using lots of different configurations I am still unable to achieve what seems quite simple.

I would like to set the default IIS homepage on an Azure VM to use Windows Authentication. I would like to Add a user or group from my local on-premise Active Directory, which is linked to an Azure Active Directory using 'Azure AD Connect'. Finally I would like to login to a client machine on my local on-premise Active Directory, and be able to browse to the Azure VM IIS default homepage without having to enter a username and password, as I am already authenticated having logged into the local Active Directory.

I am happy to try various setups and scenarios, so if you can help please shout up.

Thanks

Andy

SharePoint 2013 Non-HA Farm - Domain Controller keeps rebooting

Hi,

I've been using my azure environment for a few months and it was working great, but I'm now unable to log into my domain controller as it's constantly rebooting and the disk iops are unusually large.

I've tried redeploying the VM but that did not help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

What is azure?

Sorry for my ignoramus question but I'm not really sure what it is.

I need to set up about 5 or 6 VMs - is azure a cloud service for me to toss them on or is it a backup service?

How do I know I'll have enough storage space, memory and processing power if that is what it is?

Is there some sort of guaranteed uptime or backup /restore process?

Sorry I tried to read through the marketing doublespeak and didn't get a clear picture of what azure really is.

VM Extensions appearing as resources in resource groups

I have noticed VM extensions showing up as resources in my resource groups. I have observed this in several older resources groups. However, newer resource groups do not list VM extensions. I just wanted to find out if this is a new feature or a bug. Previously when I created those now older resource groups the VM extensions did not appear as resources. Something definitely changed.

Azure Germany badly connected within germany

this is about azure germany:
While accessing VM's in the datacenter from denmark is ok, accessing it from other german datacenters like "hetzner" is horrible.
tracing the packets they are redirected to france/london/amsterdam only to get back to central germany.
Either through:
be12194.ccr41.lon13.atlas.cogentco.com (10 different from cogento through entire western europe )
or
ae10-2021.fra20.core-backbone.com
Ping should be <10ms as they are very close physically, but are 95-97ms in real life.
From both german azure regions, and tried 2 different datacenters from hetzner as well.

Join Azure VM to Azure Active Directory

I truly hope I can get some help on this. I have an Azure Active Directory. It was created with our Office 365 subscription. It has all of our users in the Azure AD and this would be great to use. I have added a paid subscription to the service so that I could create an Azure VM. My plan was to create an Azure VM and then integrate the VM with the Azure AD. Therefore, I could use the users from the Azure AD on my VM. I tried this based on the article.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory-domain-services/active-directory-ds-admin-guide-join-windows-vm

When I attempt to do this I receive an error that an Active Directory Domain controller could not be found. The article says verify that the VM is in the same network(VNET) as the Azure Active Directory services. I have spent a few days and do not see anything or any tool that would let me determine what network the Azure AD is running on. Hopefully someone can help with this.

In summary I am trying to sync users from the Azure AD onto the Azure VM.

Install and host DC with AD onto Azure VM

Hello,

I'm the IT administrator for an SMB that has multiple sites in Canada and the US.

I'm looking to join all sites onto a single DC with AD. I want to enforce things with GPOs (password age, etc.), yet we do not have a DC in place. I'm debating about setting up an on-premise DC in my corporate Canadian head office and set up site-to-site VPN to each site. I've read that this might be possible to do with an Azure VM, but it's not clear on a few details.

Can I actually set up a DC on an Azure VM and set up site-to-site VPN to Azure instead of routing it all to Canada?

Does anyone know if I need to purchase software and CALs for the DC if I do it through the VM?

I've read a few articles where some have said no, this can't be done, and others indicating that this might be possible. I've also had consultation with other parties indicating that this may very well be possible. All information isn't clear and I'm just looking to see what options are available and Microsoft's personnel do not make this clear. They tend to require me explaining the same scenario 3 or more times and yet don't understand my business needs.

Thanks!

How Microsoft Azure overcome disaster recovery?

Dear technician,

Good day.

I have some concern regarding to disaster recovery in Microsoft Azure. Currently we are planning to promote Microsoft Azure VM as infrastructure of our solution for customer. However I have concern regarding how Microsoft overcome disaster recovery on Microsoft data center. For example, if I create a SQL Server VM by using South East Asia (Singapore) datacenter, if there are faulty on the data center itself, is that Microsoft have another mirror datacenter which can switch from the corrupted to the mirror datacenter?

Sorry my English wasn't good enough to explain the whole situation but I would like to have some direction or comment from your assistance.

Best regards,

Kai

I've just provisioned a RHEL7.3 box but I'm unable to use yum as it's stuck trying to install policycoreutils-python from the provisioning script.

I did attempt the RHUI Infra update script as suggested in [1] however curl also timed out in this script when fetching azureclient.rpm.

I also tried hitting rhui1 through 4 through my browser on my machine, but they all failed to respond.

Edit: I can also access http://www.google.com and http://www.microsoft.com with no issues from the server

ESB Toolkit?

Hi,

In the disk image description I found: "Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010 R2 CTP (64-bit) on Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1. This image contains the CTP version of BizTalk Server 2010 R2. Some BizTalk Server components like accelerators and ESB Toolkit require additional setup before use. Medium is the recommended size for this image".

I have now an active VM with BizTalk 2010 R2 CTP configured. But I don't find anywhere the guidance to activate & configure the ESB Toolkit. Can you give more details on that?...

Thanks,
Marius

Is it possible to record audio on azure vm? Using the mmc i did the following, In Device and Resource redirection, enable Allow Audio and Video Playback Redirection, then restarted vm.

In the RDP dialog I selected "Record audio from this computer" and audio playback on this computer.

Nothing works. Additionally there is no recording device on the sound dialog. See attached pic.
