Adding a VM to function as a terminal server

$

From Daan Vermeulen (@twalle88 ) via Twitter who tweets:

“I made a virtual machine, that will function as domain controller. It's an A0 sized and works fine. Now I want to add a second virtual machine that will function as terminal server. It should be a D1 sized machine, but when I click next I get this error:
"The cloud service you've selected doesn't support the virtual machine size selected in the previous step.

Customer referenced the the documentation on  https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/migrating-existing-services-to-regional-scope/ and also added:“Does that mean that, when I created my initial first VM, I actually had to choose region 'West Europe' instead of choosing my previously created Virtual Network? - I tried that already, but then I cannot select fixed IP '10.0.0.4' in the Azure portal when I configure the VM's IP address"

The customer was also referred to the documentation on https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/16163bb2-e91b-423e-a914-e8c980904ba7/forum-faq-cannot-use-the-dseries-sizes-for-an-azure-virtual-machine?forum=WAVirtualMachinesforWindows but this did not help. The customer also added:

“Well, I'm creating a standard VM (not basic), and the region is West Europe and not Brazil South. So I don't think it will get me any further. Thanks anyway, though! Any other suggestions? I can choose the D1 size, it is actually listed, but when I go to the next step I get the error, "The cloud service you've selected doesn't support the virtual machine size selected in the previous step."

Sudden decrease in performance

Hello,

One of my Basic A1 machines with Win Server 2008 R2 is suddenly running horribly slow.  All that is running is a small access database and win task manager.  Connected through RDS.  Routinely freezes for 5 - 10 seconds, and as it un-freezes, CPU % shows 100.  Any ideas on what to check first?   Thanks.

Scaling up from a single Standard VM

I have a standard A1 VM. Performance is fine 95% of the time, but at peak times I would like to be able to consider scaling up to another VM. What are my options? Ideally I would like to only pay for one VM and another to turn itself on when necessary and then switch itself off. It took me a while to set up the machine so again ideally I'd like to be able to "clone" it rather than have to set up a new one.

VHD created Azure VM doesn't honor the memory setting from Hyper-V higher than 512 MB

Hi, Azure Expert,

I am working on Android related project. (Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.r1) We were able to download the source code and build iso from it. And then mount the iso on Windows Hyper-V to generate VHD. In Hyper-V, there’s an option to set memory size, say 1.6GB. And after boot up the Android OS, it does show the total memory of 1.6GB using “dumpsys meminfo”, for example. Then we used the Powershell to convert the avhd -> vhd, and upload it to Azure Cloud. After that we used the vhd to create Android VMs (each VM is D3 with 14 GB RAM).

Here comes the issue. When we use the "adb command" (this is the only way to talk to the VMs) to dump the meminfo from an external worker role, it shows 512 MB total memory. It doesn’t honor the 1.6 GB setting from Hyper-V.

Total RAM: 511020 kB

I talked the Android developer, this is the feedback:

>>> The memory is detected by kernel at boot time. No any config needed to be changed in the android world. The only reason 512mb is reported is you only configured 512mb for it. If you have > 4GB ram, you need to adjust kernel config to support> 4GB ram. But it's not your case.

So, how do I enable the Azure VM to increase/show higher RAM?

Thanks.

Help on how to get Microsoft.Network/publicIPAddresses/ipAddress and use it with Linux CSE (ARM)

Hello,

I'm trying to developing some scripts for an Azure Linux VM and I need to get and store its Public IP in these scripts.

First question: how can I get this IP ? It should be a property of (Microsoft.Network/publicIPAddresses),(nicName)

Second question: Linux Custom Script Extensions can use this value in a post deployment script ? Something like this:

Example: "commandToExecute": "echo reference('Microsoft.Network/publicIPAddresses/myPublicIP')"

Thanks in advance

How to upgrade VM Scale Sets in a HA mode

Lets say I have my app deployed into a VM Scale Set. How do I push an update to my application in a rolling\HA way?  Can you point me to a video or documentation on the subject?

Also let's say I wanted to change the image that my app is based on, how can I change that in a rolling way?  Same thing, it would be great to see a video or documentation on this.

Thanks.

Network Problems

Hello all,

I have a Azure VM configured with Windows Server 2012 R2 as an Exchange Server. I have this attached to my on-premises network through site-to-site VPN. I shut down the server, and start it back up again about 5 hours later. The status showed as "Running," and there was no indication of anything wrong other than the fact that the Virtual IP Address (which is reserved by the way) didn't pop up until a couple minutes later. I was not able to RDP into my VM. I tried to ping it and request timed out. I checked the boot diagnostics to see the logon screen which revealed that the VM did not detect the network cable. Here is a picture to better illustrate what I am saying: As you can see, the VM does not detect the network cable. Despite numerous reboots, the issue persists. To verify there wasn't a problem, I booted into another VM, which works perfectly. So I know that the issue is with the VM. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Apoorv Chauhan

Hi,

I have a linux vm with centos 6.7

I have resized the vm from D1 to D2 and D2 plan has 100GB local ssd storage.

However, after resize process disk size does not change.

When I check the filesystem, it shows only /dev/sda1 disk with 30G capacity.

How can i use 100GB local storage?

Thank you.

Hi,

some days ago i see, there was a new type of virtual machines (or better my machines are now classic)

My question is and i didnt find good information on that:

1. How do these two compare

2. Does it make sense to migrate from classic mode to the other

3. if yes, how can i migrate

We have Windows Servers only running on Azure...

Thanks for any help and hints

Dv2 versus DSv2

$

It appears that DSv2 VMs are available now (At least through powershell, they don't appear in the GUI).  I believe that the DSv2 VMs are the same price as Dv2 VMs (At least that's how the D versus DS series were handled) - so is there any reason why one would want to choose Dv2 OVER DSv2 at this point?

Assuming you are able to use standard storage on DSv2 VMs if you choose to, it seems that there would be no reason to continue using Dv2 VMs - or am I missing something?  It seems like they have the same cost and speed and the only difference is that DSv2 gives you greater flexibility if you choose to use premium disks.

Just looking for a little confirmation :)

Assistance with Powershell Azure Inventory script

$

Hello,

I have the following script we use to inventory all VM's available to me in Azure.

I want to include in my output a column of the ping status for each and every VM.  I'm guessing I need to include in my $toecho line a column that represents the ping status.  I've read posts on using test-connection but I don't know how I can add this to my $toecho line or if it should be added elsewhere?

I'm hoping someone can assist me with what I need to insert and where in my script to report the ping status of each VM found in our Azure subscriptions.

Import-Module 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Azure\PowerShell\ServiceManagement\Azure\Azure.psd1'

$cred = Get-Credential
Add-AzureAccount -Credential $cred
$outputresults = "c:\temp\scan.txt"

$Subscriptions = Get-AzureSubscription
echo "SubscriptionName,AvailabilitySetName,DeploymentName,DNSName,GuestAgentStatus,HostName,InstanceErrorCode,InstanceFaultDomain,InstanceName,InstanceSize,InstanceStateDetails,InstanceStatus,InstanceUpgradeDomain,IpAddress,Label,Name,NetworkInterfaces,OperationDescription,OperationId,OperationStatus,PowerState,PublicIPAddress,PublicIPDomainNameLabel,PublicIPFqdns,PublicIPName,RemoteAccessCertificateThumbprint,ResourceExtensionStatusList,ServiceName,Status,VirtualNetworkName,VM" > $outputresults
ForEach ($azureSub in $Subscriptions)
    {
        echo $azureSub.SubscriptionName
        Set-AzureSubscription -SubscriptionName $azureSub.SubscriptionName
        Select-AzureSubscription -SubscriptionName $azureSub.SubscriptionName
        $VirtualMacine = Get-AzureVM
        foreach ($Virtual in $VirtualMacine)
        {
            $toecho = $azureSub.SubscriptionName + "," + $Virtual.AvailabilitySetName + "," + $Virtual.DeploymentName + "," + $Virtual.DNSName + "," + $Virtual.GuestAgentStatus + "," + $Virtual.HostName + "," + $Virtual.InstanceErrorCode + "," + $Virtual.InstanceFaultDomain + "," + $Virtual.InstanceName + "," + $Virtual.InstanceSize + "," + $Virtual.InstanceStateDetails + "," + $Virtual.InstanceStatus + "," + $Virtual.InstanceUpgradeDomain + "," + $Virtual.IpAddress + "," + $Virtual.Label + "," + $Virtual.Name + "," + $Virtual.NetworkInterfaces + "," + $Virtual.OperationDescription + "," + $Virtual.OperationId + "," + $Virtual.OperationStatus + "," + $Virtual.PowerState + "," + $Virtual.PublicIPAddress + "," + $Virtual.PublicIPDomainNameLabel + "," + $Virtual.PublicIPFqdns + "," + $Virtual.PublicIPName + "," + $Virtual.RemoteAccessCertificateThumbprint + "," + $Virtual.ResourceExtensionStatusList + "," + $Virtual.ServiceName + "," + $Virtual.Status + "," + $Virtual.VirtualNetworkName + "," + $Virtual.VM
            echo $toecho >> $outputresults
        }

Error creating DS2 SQL2014 VM

Hi,

I deployed a DS2 SQL2014 VM image from the portal. This took a long time but even though the portal said it was "updating" the VM was created and SQL seemed to be running normally. I left this for some time and eventually the deployment reported as "failed".

There seems to have been resource conflict of some sort according to the error message. The error is associated with the dscextension:

All four subsequent steps failed. Can this be fixed or should this be deleted and re-deployed?

Jeff.

Register DNS not working

$

Hi, I have 2 virtual machines in a vnet in Azure. 1 is Server 2012 r2 from the marketplace and 1  build locally in Hyper-V and uploaded converted to disk etc. The 1st machine from the marketplace will issue a DNS update via ipconfig /registerdns ok with no errors at all. The second one does not and throw event 8018 to the system event log:

The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:

           Adapter Name : {5D7C09A2-CF46-498C-8E19-8E486C4698B5}
           Host Name : SVWAZUDC01
           Primary Domain Suffix : <removed this text>
           DNS server list :
              192.168.0.15, 192.168.0.16
           Sent update to server : <?>
           IP Address(es) :
             10.10.0.4

From what I can see the 2 machines are identical. I've tried all the usual such as checking the 'register this connections address in dns' in the network interface properties.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Chris

Is Azure VM Autoscale like Hyper-V Dynamic Memory?

$

I'm wondering if any of the functions in Azure Autoscale is like anything of Hyper-V Dynamic Memory. The reason I'm asking is that I'm going to deploy a few .NET applications that does not work with Dynamic Memory. The Autoscale feature in Azure is quite like Hyper-V Dynamic Memory.

why gettimeofday() running very slowly on azure virtual machine

Hello:

   We meet a stupid question, we are deploy a network server process on azure. After some profiling, we found the linux c function “gettimeofday” is a bottleneck. But this situaion is only observed at azure ubuntu 14.04 with D2V2 spec machine

Below is a pure simulation call of gettimeofday at one thread

------------------------------------------------------

time = 1459397349.722350

time = 1459397739.012485

Number of Calls = 1000000000

-----------------------------------------------------

In our i7 PC,  it just take 16 sec

------------------------------------------------------

time = 1459411719.872520

time = 1459411735.871964

Number of Calls = 1000000000

I'm not sure if Azure Site Recovery provides the ability to replicate my Azure infrastructure from my existing subscription to another subscription, or from existing region to another region.
