FTP Access to my VM Changed

FTP access to my VM (classic) has changed recently. The first symptom is that Wordpress can't update automatically any more. Clear settings mode works in FileZilla, but not TLS. 

1) I'm using Filezilla

2) FTP mode is set to active

3) the full connection works when TLS is turned off.

4) turning it on "allow TLS if available" cause the directory listing to fail.The authentication is working but the data connection is timing out when encryption is used.
