Rename VM Name on Portal using Custom Script Extensions?

Hello,
I need to rename a VM on the Azure portal. I can't seem to find a way to do this besides doing something like the following:

1. Delete the VM and keep the disk
2. Recreate the VM with the new name and with the unassigned disk.

Is it possible to leverage the custom script extensions to rename a VM on the portal (not the actual VM hostname)? I've seen several hits on the web but can't seem to find an Azure cmdlet or script extension solution to rename a VM on the Azure portal (new or current).
