Standard A8 VM responsiveness

Hello,

I'm trying to perform some CPU intensive tasks so rather than set a system up locally I thought I'd use Azure to get it done quickly and cheaply.

I've created a new Windows Server 2008 R2 VM (Standard A8 size) running a clean installation of SQL Server 2005 and nothing else. There's no workload going through the system yet other than me logging in to download some data files from Azure Blob storage that are needed for testing.

However I'm finding that while doing this, the system appears sluggish and the RDP session appears to stop updating from time to time. CPU and Memory usage are nothing at all, all I'm doing currently is downloading 3GB of data (4 files in total) from blob storage using the command line tools. While this is going on Windows Explorer is unresponsive and I can't even open another Explorer window, the download speed displayed by the CLI tool stops for minutes on end, and then starts going again.

Right now the RDP session has frozen and I'm unable to reconnect to it.

I even went as far as deleting the first VM I setup and created another but I see the same performance issues and "hanging".

Is anyone else seeing issues or have experienced this in the past?

Thanks,

Andy
