Assign AD Account to VM Question

I'm very new to Azure.  Before I came on this project, AD was already synced to Azure.  I have a user in AD that I need to assign to a VM.  Is that possible?  The Azure VMs are not on our domain.  If that's not possible, is there a way to create a cloud Office 365 account and assign it to the VM?
