Virtual Machine - Disk name

Hi,

When creating a VM (using the Azure Portal) I see the naming of the disk that's created as part of a VM has a part of the name of an earlier VM in it? What are the naming rules when creating these disks? Can these (namings) be changed or selected when creating a VM?
