Virtual machines and availability sets running stateful services

We are trying out the Azure platform for our server component running as a Windows service, the service is stateful holding information about each connected client for data syncing between all the client nodes. The service holds the complete datamodel in RAM keeps track of all recent changes made by the clients, what changes each client haven't received, etc.

As I understand reading the documentation, you will need to have two virtual machines running in availability set in order to get the 99.95% SLA uptime.

How does this work when running a virtual machine that has stateful services like ours, out of the box? Do we need to implement synchronization between services installing a "backup" service on one of the two virtual machines?

Appreciate all help on how to architect this scenario. :)

Have a nice day!
