DNS Issues in Azure VM Active Directory Domain

Hi folks -

Here's the deal, I'm looking to evaluating running some applications in an Azure VM environment.  To perform this application, I setup the following VMs:

  • Domain controller
  • Backup domain controller
  • SQL Server
  • Application Server

All of these VMs are connected to the same virtual network (10.0.0.0/24).  The virtual network has been configured with the IPs of the DC and backup DC as DNS servers.  DNS on the DC and backup DC are configured with a DNS forwarder, an address that I assume is an internal Azure DNS server.

The problem I'm running into is that name resolution within my domain seems to work just fine.  Unfortunately name resolution out to the internet seems spotty at best.  To get applications installed on my server, I need to download ISO images from various websites.  When I try to do this, IE won't load most pages.  Running nslookup from the command line confirms that the problem here is not being able to resolve domain names of sites I'm trying to access.

Any idea what gives here?  Is what I'm trying to do here not a supported use case for Azure VMs?

Thanks!
