"Your credentials did not work" when trying to log into a net new Windows Azure Virtual Machine

I have created a new Virtual Machine using the Gallery. Simply selecting Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Image. I entered a user name and password in there. I waited for it to provisioning the VM and it to start...which it did fine. I click Connect and click Open to open the Remote Desktop program. When I type in my credentials into the prompt it returns the error "Your credentials did not work".

I have tried this on a non-domain Windows 8 machine and a domain joined Windows 8 machine. Both on and off my corporate network.

The username was "jthake" and I used "\jthake" to ensure the domain wasn't being passed through. I also tried the host name listed in the Portal UI too e.g. "THAKEDC\jthake" but no luck either.

I have tried this twice now with no luck and its definitely not my password being incorrect.

I'm assuming as I'm getting prompted that it isn't a firewall or port issue. Would that be correct?

I was on the Virtual Machines preview. But the Network, Cloud Service and Storage was created is all net new in the Portal UI.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
